Contact and Cover Officer Responsibilities

When an officer is dispatched to a serious call, a backup officer should be sent to assure the first officer’s safety.  It is important that officers know what their individual responsibilities are when in a two-officer unit or assisting another officer(s) on a call.  Failure to follow proper procedure and good tactics/techniques could cost a life.

The contact officer conducts the business of the encounter.

  1. Issues verbal commands.
  2. Performs handcuffing and searching.
  3. Handles radio communications.
  4. Documents the incident.
  5. Recovers evidence and/or contraband.

The cover officer devotes full attention to the suspects from a position behind cover.

  1. Must resist distractions.
  2. Discourage hostile acts by suspects.
  3. Stop any escape attempts.
  4. Prevents destruction of evidence.

Intervenes with the appropriate level of force if necessary.
