Admission Policy
Only certified
officers are eligible to enroll in advanced/specialized courses.
Advanced courses are not mandatory. However, prerequisites have
been established for many of the advanced courses. If an officer
does not meet prerequisite requirements, that officer will not
be allowed to attend. If you have a question about a particular
course, please contact the course liaison.
Legal Update - MANDATORY
Legal courses taught via Academy teleconference.
This teleconference will deal
with specific changes and developments in the existing law and
will also include a section dealing with timely topics, subject
to change throughout the year. The course format will include;
case study by videotaped scenarios and lecture, as well as,
discussion of particular topics with guests.
Teleclasses - Law Enforcement courses taught via
Academy teleconference.
Formerly CORE courses,
teleclasses are self-contained, one-time presentations of
not more than three hours duration, dealing with the review and
update of one specific subject or topic.
Advanced
Criminal Domestic
Violence Investigations
Designed to provide the law
enforcement officer with a thorough training background in
domestic violence law, photography, stalking/harassment,
forensic identification of injuries, dynamics of victim/offender
behavior, victimless prosecution, interviewing skills, federal
laws and warrants.
Who should attend
Those SC certified officers
specifically working criminal domestic violence crimes.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a
proficiency rating of 75% in order to pass the course and
receive recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement
Education hours - CLEE).
Advanced
Criminal Enforcement (A.C.E.)
Designed to expose traffic
officers to advanced enforcement techniques which include: field
interview methods, basic drug identification, legal aspects of
vehicle stops and searches, drug interdiction techniques,
vehicle concealment areas and searches, and officer safety.
Who should attend
Designed for, but not limited to,
uniformed patrol officers whose responsibilities include traffic
law enforcement and interdiction efforts.
Proficiency
100% class attendance and
participation is required.
DUI Detection/SFST
Designed to provide the law
enforcement officer with a thorough training background in
detection, apprehension and investigation of DUI cases. Content
includes case law and procedures of probable cause, search and
seizure, chemical breath tests, roadside sobriety checkpoint,
interviewing and introduction to drugged driving. This training
also includes in depth training and information covering
courtroom procedure, testimony, rules of evidence and moot
court. Each attending officer will be a candidate for role play
and/or prosecuting officer in moot court. Presenters instructing
courtroom procedure will be both prosecuting attorneys and
defense attorneys. Some night time hours will be required in
this course.
Who should attend
Officers holding basic law
enforcement certification and particularly those officers
assigned to traffic enforcement units.
Proficiency
Officers must obtain a minimum
score of 75% on the final examination and successfully complete
all homework and classroom projects and proficiency test to
receive recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement
Education hours - CLEE). Attendance for the course is 100%
unless prior arrangements are made.
DUI SFSTs Instructor School
Who should attend
Attendance is restricted to
currently certified Standardized Field Sobriety Test
Practitioners. Candidates are SELECTED for attendance.
At Scene
Traffic Collision Investigation
Designed for police officers who
collect and record data at the scenes of motor vehicle
accidents. The course takes the participant far beyond the
"report writing" that is traditionally taught in basic traffic
collision courses. Topics to be examined include: preservation
of physical evidence, evidence from the vehicle, evidence from
the traffic way, measuring/diagramming, and speed estimates.
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement certified
officers who are assigned to traffic units or who are called
upon regularly to investigate traffic accidents.
Proficiency
Officers must obtain a minimum
score of 75% on final examination and complete all homework and
classroom projects assigned in order to receive recertification
credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Auto/Vehicle Theft
Designed for the officer who
investigates vehicle theft. Individual characteristics and
identification methods for the following types of vehicles will
be discussed: tractors and trailers, motorcycles, and heavy
equipment. Topics will include theft and disposal techniques,
case management and information sources, number restoration and
vehicle processing, and legal issues.
Who should attend
Officers who have the
responsibility of investigating stolen vehicles.
Proficiency
Class attendance and
participation and completion of all class assignments must be
met in order to receive recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Officers may wear uniforms or
casual or dress slacks and collared shirts, and should bring
utilities (BDUs, Crime Scene uniforms, etc.) to be worn when
processing evidence.
B.A.C. DataMaster
Certification
Designed to train basic certified
officers to successfully administer B.A.C. DataMaster tests.
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement certified
officers, preferably with one year experience.
Proficiency
Officer must obtain a minimum
score of 75% on the final examination and successfully complete
all practical application assignments and proficiencies to be
eligible for certification as a BAC DataMaster operator. The
officer must meet the proficiency rating in order to receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Basic
Detective
Designed for officers assigned to
investigative units or who primarily perform investigative
functions. Course topics include case management and case
prioritizing, information sources, case preparation, courtroom
procedure and rules of evidence, crime analysis, sex crimes,
interview and interrogation techniques, property crimes,
handling juvenile offenders, managing informants, and crime
scene management. Other topics include the proper techniques
used to develop probable cause for writing search and arrest
warrants using the appropriate language and structure.
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement
certification is required and only those officers assigned to
investigative units or whose duties primarily involve
investigative function should attend.
Proficiency
Class attendance and
participation and completion of all class assignments.
Basic
Fingerprint
Designed for those law
enforcement officers or civilians who have responsibilities in
the areas of crime scene processing and latent fingerprint
identification. Topics included are fingerprint recognition and
identification, and latent fingerprint comparison. This course
is very demanding and deals with the rules governing fingerprint
patterns and provides the student with a basic knowledge needed
to advance to latent comparisons. This course does not
provide training on techniques of rolling fingerprints in
detention or booking type settings.
Who should attend
Student must be a certified
officer or civilian assigned as a fingerprint technician with a
law enforcement agency.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Basic Instructor
Development
Designed primarily for
departmental training officers responsible for conducting or
assisting in providing general law enforcement instruction to
departmental Pre-Service and In-Service classes.
Course material will include such
subjects as preparation of lesson plans, training needs
assessment and analysis, training liability, methods of
instruction, the adult learner and positive instructor
techniques. Students who meet both written and proficiency test
requirements will be accredited by the South Carolina Criminal
Justice Academy as a Basic Law Enforcement Instructor.
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement certified
officers who are to be assigned as departmental training
officers. Officers should also be proficient in the use of
computers and computer software including word processing and
graphics programs.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve an
aggregate score of 75 on a multiple choice written test, lesson
plan preparation, and 30-minute instructional presentation in
order to pass the course and receive a certificate of
accreditation. Officers must achieve the proficiency rating in
order to receive recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Child Abuse Investigations
Designed for law enforcement
personnel who have investigative responsibility for child abuse
cases. Some of the topics covered include the legal aspects of
abuse and neglect investigations, sexual exploitation and child
pornography, case management and medical factors.
Who should attend
Student must have completed Basic
Detective or have three years of investigation experience.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Crime Scene Techniques for
Investigators
Designed for investigators and
personnel assigned to forensic units whose responsibilities
include processing crime scenes with an emphasis on property
crimes. Topics include: basic fingerprint processing, basic
crime scene mapping, footwear impression recovery, proper
collection and packaging of evidence and photography.
Who should attend
The student must be an
investigator or an individual assigned to process crime scenes

Special equipment required
Officers may wear uniforms or
casual or dress slacks and collared shirts, and should bring

Defensive Tactics
Instructor
Designed to certify the officer
as a Pressure Points Control Tactics/Defensive Tactics and
Spontaneous Knife Defense Instructor.
Who should attend
Supervisors, training officers,
or officers involved with the training of others. To be
eligible to attend this course, the student must be SCCJA
Accredited Instructor, having successfully completed either the
24 hour Specific Skill Instructor course or the 80 hour Basic
Instructor course.
Proficiency
Officers must exhibit a minimum
proficiency rating and 80% on all written tests to successfully
complete this course, receive a certificate of accreditation and
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Duty belt and holster, handcuffs,
gym clothing with tennis shoes, groin cups, and mouthpieces.
Defensive
Tactics Instructor Recertification
Designed to review and provide
instruction for the recertification of officers currently
holding a Defensive Tactics Instructor certification.
Who should attend
Law Enforcement and Correctional
officers who currently hold a Defensive Tactics Instructor
certification AND HAVE NOT COMPLETED A PROFICIENCY IN THE
PAST THREE YEARS.
Proficiency
Officers will be required to
achieve a minimum written test score of 80%. This will include
both the written test for the Defensive Tactics Instructor
program and the Spontaneous Knife Defense Instructor program.
Students must also meet minimum proficiency requirements on all
three proficiency tests. These will include Defensive Tactics
Instructor, Spontaneous Knife Defense Instructor, and Weapon
Retention and Disarming.
Special equipment required
Duty belt and holster, handcuffs,
gym clothing with tennis shoes, groin cup and mouth piece.
Driving Instructor
Designed for the officer who will
serve as a Driving Instructor. The officer will be taught
proper vehicle driving techniques and how to develop a driving
course for his/her department. This course is a combination of
classroom and practical exercises. Each department is limited
to one officer per class.
Who should attend
Officers who have a minimum of
three years continuous law enforcement experience and who will
be assigned as their department's designated driving
instructor. All officers must hold SC Criminal Justice Academy
Specific Skill Instructor or Basic Instructor accreditation.
Proficiency
Officers must
pass the pre-qual course to continue attendance, maintain 100%
attendance, exhibit 85 % proficiency on the final written test,
and pass all driving courses daily to successfully
complete this course, receive a certificate of accreditation and
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Drug Investigation Level I
Designed to provide the new drug
agent with instruction in drug investigations procedures.
Topics include: investigation procedures involving drug
identification, drug laws, case initiation,
interviews/interrogations, informant control, buy bust planning,
stress control, search warrants, evidence collection,
surveillance, case management and documentation.
Who should attend
Law enforcement personnel who
anticipate transferring to or have been assigned to a drug unit.
This course is a prerequisite for Narcotics Undercover
Techniques, and Drug Unit Command Training. Officers must have
a good understanding of investigations to be successful in these
specific areas of advanced training.
Proficiency
Class attendance and
participation and completion of all class assignments must be
met in order to receive recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Non-law enforcement identifiable
range clothing. Long pants, collared shirt and shoes.
Drug Unit Command Level II
This is a management course in
the supervision of drug units and personnel. Topics will
include: drug unit administration, policy/procedure, staffing,
officer training, net worth investigations, media relations,
intelligence gathering and funding.
Who should attend
Officers who are currently
assigned to a drug unit and will be or are currently in a
supervisory position. Officers must have successfully completed
the SCCJA Drug Investigation Level I Course or a comparable
school and have two years experience in investigations.
Proficiency
Class attendance and
participation and completion of all class assignments must be
met in order to receive recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education – CLEE).
Special equipment required
Dress slacks, shirt and tie or
departmental uniform.
Elder Abuse
This course will present a
comprehensive overview of the problem of Elder Abuse in our
society. It will address such topics as victims and abuser
typology, legal aspects, law enforcement response and high risk
family systems. It will also present information relative to
the abuse of other high risk adults such as the developmentally
and physically challenged.
Who should attend
Officers holding basic law
enforcement certification.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Field Training Officer
The Field Training Officer program is
designed to train those officers who have been identified to
train newly graduated officer recruits as part of their
department's Feild Training Officer program. Topics covered will
include adult learning theories, evaluation processes and
appraisal errors, feedback and counseling, ethics, and the Daily
Observation Report.
This course will focus in the
newly-developed SCCJA eight week field training program for
officer recruits..
Who should attend
Class 1 Law Enforcement officer
certification is required.
Proficiency/credits
Officers must obtain 70% proficiency on a
written examination to successfully complete the course.
Recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE) will be awarded for successful completion of the
program.
Field
Training Officer Management Program
the Field Training Officer Management
Program is for departments interested in teaching the
newly-developed SCCJA Field Training Officer curriculum to Field
Training Officers who will ultimately train new recruits in an
eight-week training program.
Topics addresses will include objectives
of an FTO program, selection of a Field Training Officer,
evaluation of officer recruits, and teaching and managing the
SCCJA Field TrainingOfficer Program.
Who should attend
Class 1 Law Enforcement
certification is required. The officer must be certified in
either Specific Skills or Basic Instructor Development. The
officer should also be responsible for managing the department's
FTO program, and should have either attended the SCCJA Field
Training Officer program or have a general familiarity with FTO
programs.
Proficiency
Recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE) will be awarded for
successful completion of the program.
NOTE: Additional on-sight technical
assistance will be available to officers attending, if their
department agrees to implement an FTO program. This will be
explained in detail in class.
Firearms Instructor
Designed for the officer who will
serve as a firearms instructor for the department and will cover
such topics as the mechanics and techniques of practical
firearms training for revolvers, auto pistols, and shotguns.
Who should attend
Officers holding SC Criminal
Justice Academy Specific Skills Instructor or Basic Instructor
Accreditation.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 85%
proficiency rating to pass the course, receive a certificate of
accreditation and recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
A revolver, auto-pistol, leather
support equipment, shotgun, range clothing, shooting glasses and
flashlight.
Firearms
Training System (FATS) Instructor
Designed to instruct in the
operation and management of the Firearms Training System
(FATS). The system offers advanced features that represent the
state of the art in small arms simulators. Upon successful
completion of this course, the FATS may be loaned to the
participant's department in order to further enhance firearms
training.
Who should attend
Only South Carolina Criminal
Justice Academy accredited Firearms Instructors are eligible to
attend.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course. This course meets
recertification requirements.
Ground Defense Instructor
Designed to certify the officer
as Ground Defense Instructor.
Who should attend
Supervisors, training officers,
or officers involved with the training of others. To be
eligible to attend this course, the student must be a SCCJA
accredited instructor, having successfully completed either the
Specific Skill Instructor course or the Basic Instructor course.
Proficiency
Officers must exhibit a minimum
80% proficiency rating to successfully complete this course,
receive a certificate of accreditation and recertification
credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).

Ground Defense
Instructor Recertification
Designed to review and provide
instruction for the recertification of officers currently
holding a Ground Defense Instructor certification.
Who should attend
Law Enforcement and Correctional
officers who currently hold a Ground Defense Instructor
Certification, and who have not completed a proficiency in the
past three years.
Proficiency
Officers will be required to
achieve a minimum written test score of 80% Students must also
meet minimum proficiency requirements on proficiency test to
receive recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement
Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Duty belt and holster, handcuffs,
gym clothing with tennis shoes, knee pads, ballistic vests,
groin cups, mouthpieces and elbow protection. This
recertification program is physically demanding and requires
that students be in good physical condition and good health.
Interviews and
Interrogations
Designed to provide students with
instruction in specific interviewing and interrogation
techniques. It will address such topics as detecting deception,
neurolinguistic techniques, witness statements and
interpretation of behavioral betrayals.
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement
certification is required for this class.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a
proficiency in practical application and class participation in
order to receive recertification credit (Continuing Law
Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Introduction to
Supervision
Designed For those departmental
officers who have been identified as prepared for promotion to
first line supervisory duties or for those who need to improve
their supervisory skills. Course materials will include such
subject areas as leadership fundamentals, study of human
behavior, leadership principles and traits, supervisory
liability and concepts of effective counseling.
Who should attend
Certified basic law enforcement
officers who are identified as ready for first line supervisory
duties or officers identified as requiring improvement on their
supervisory skills.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75% on a
final exam to pass the course and receive recertification credit
(Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Issues in Leadership
Designed for managers to acquaint
them with some of the crucial issues facing today's leaders.
Who should attend
Designed for managers with the
rank of Lieutenant or above and can submit documentation of one
of the following criteria:
1) Successful completion of
Introduction to Supervision and Mid-Level Management;
2) Successful completion of independent management/leadership
training equaling a minimum of 40 hours;
3) Successful completion of military management/leadership
training equaling a minimum of 40 hours;
4) Successful completion, with a grade of C or better, of a
college course in the area of management/leadership; or
5) Hold the position of chief executive officer of a law
enforcement agency or detention facility.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency on a written examination to complete the
requirements for this course and receive recertification credit
(Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Juvenile
Delinquency: Theory and Practice
Designed for law enforcement
personnel who have responsibility for juvenile related matters.
Course content will include an overview of the problem of
juvenile delinquency and address such topics as the concept of
delinquency, theoretical foundations, the juvenile offender, the
juvenile justice system (with emphasis on South Carolina) and
long-term perspectives for delinquency in our society.
Who should attend
Student must be a certified
officer.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Latent Fingerprint
Processing
Designed for personnel who are
assigned to a crime scene or laboratory unit. Responsibilities
must include the of physical evidence from a crime scene, as it
relates to latent fingerprints. Topics will include all phases
of latent fingerprint enhancement utilizing powders, chemical
development, forensic light sources and photographic techniques.
Who should attend
Student must be a certified
officer or civilian assigned to a crime scene unit or his/her
duties must include field and lab processing for latent
fingerprints. The student must have completed Basic Photography
or have knowledge of film and photograph processing in a lab
setting.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Officers may wear uniforms or
casual or dress slacks and collared shirts, and should bring
utilities (BDUs, Crime Scene uniforms, etc.) to be worn when
processing evidence.
Law Enforcement
Photography
Designed to teach photographic
concepts and procedures to investigators, crime scene officers
and technicians, and accident scene investigators. Participants
will learn operations and functions of a 35mm camera and flash
equipment, and will learn systematic approaches to documenting
scenes for effective evidence collection through photography.
Additional topics will include close-up photography, painting
with light, use of forensic light sources, digital photography,
black and white processing and printing, and legal requirements.
In addition to lecture sessions and demonstrations, numerous
"hands-on" exercises will be assigned to ensure understanding
and demonstrate proficiency.
Who should attend
Certified officer or civilian
assigned to a crime scene unit whose job includes processing
crime scenes.
Proficiency
Officers must complete all
classroom assignments in order to receive recertification credit
(Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment needed
Officers may wear uniforms or
casual or dress slacks and collared shirts, and should bring
utilities (BDUs, Crime Scene uniforms, etc.) to be worn when
photographing processing evidence. Each officer should bring a
minimum of 12 rolls of 35-mm color print film as follows: 8
rolls of 200 ISO, 24 exposures and 4 rolls of 400 ISO, 24
exposures. Officers should bring all photographic equipment
that will be used to perform job duties to include cameras,
lenses, flash units, tripods, any additional accessories and a
sufficient supply of batteries to operate all equipment.
Mid Level Management
Designed to take mid-level
management personnel through a comprehensive study of the role
of managers in law enforcement. Topics to be discussed are:
management concepts and principles, effective writing and
speaking, budgeting, delegation, media relations, stress
management, time management and contemporary police
problems/solutions.
Who should attend
For supervisors that have
successfully completed the Introduction to Supervision course
and currently function as a mid-level supervisor.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency rating to pass the course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Narcotic Undercover
Techniques
An advanced course in undercover
techniques with an emphasis on narcotic undercover operations.
Course material/instruction will build upon basic investigative
procedures and address the undercover officer's role in law
enforcement, undercover operations, case development, stress,
informant control and surveillance. Students will participate
in range exercises that require working in an undercover
capacity.
Who should attend
Personnel required to work in an
undercover capacity. Attendees must have completed the CJA Drug
Investigations course, CJA Basic Detective course, or a
comparable investigations school of 40 hours or more. Officers
should be currently assigned to a drug or investigative unit,
have at least two years law enforcement experience and a good
understanding of investigations prior to attending.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a 75%
proficiency on a written examination and satisfactorily complete
all practical exercises in order to pass this course and receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Special equipment required
Non-law enforcement identifiable
range and street type clothing. Casual dress of long pants,
collared shirts and tennis shoes. No shorts, sandals or
inappropriate designs on clothing allowed.
Oleoresin Capsicum Instructor
Designed to certify an officer as
an Oleoresin Capsicum Instructor.
Who should attend
Supervisors, training officers,
or officers involved with the training of others. To be
eligible to attend this course, the student must be a SCCJA
accredited instructor, having successfully completed either the
24 hour Specific Skills Instructor Course or the 80 hour Basic
Instructor Course.
Proficiency
Officers must exhibit a minimum
80% proficiency rating to successfully complete this course,
receive a certificate of accreditation and recertification
credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Special equipment needed
Duty belt and holster, casual
clothes, a change of clothes which will be necessary due to live
contact spraying with Oleoresin Capsicum and a towel and bar of
soap for optional shower.
Oleoresin Capsicum
Instructor Recertification
Designed to review and provide
instruction for the recertification of officers currently
holding Oleoresin Capsicum Instructor certification.
Who should attend
Law enforcement and correctional
officers who currently hold a SCCJA Oleoresin Capsicum
Instructor certification, and who have NOT
completed a proficiency in the past three years.
Proficiency
Officers will be required to
achieve a minimum written test score of 80%. Students must also
meet minimum proficiency requirements on proficiency test.
Special equipment needed
Duty belt and holster, handcuffs,
gym clothing with tennis shoes.
Police
Mountain Bike Rider Certification (Basic)
Designed to provide officers with
comprehensive rider training. The class will center around
riding techniques and tactics specifically designed for patrol
applications and procedures. Topics that will be discussed
include: community Policing and the role of the police mountain
bike, police history and evolution of the mountain bike, proper
diet and nutrition, injuries and first aid, South Carolina laws
regulating bicycles, uniform and proper fit, bicycle
maintenance, riding protocol, technical riding techniques, and
tactical approaches and take downs.
Who should attend
Intended for the officer who is
currently assigned to a mountain patrol unit and is recommended
for, but not limited to, those officers who have not had
previous rider training.
NOTE: This course is very
physically demanding. Any officer who attends must meet the
following prerequisites: be capable of doing fifteen push ups
while wearing ballistic vest and duty belt, run .25 miles while
wearing ballistic vest and duty belt, and be capable of riding a
minimum of fifteen miles per day while wearing ballistic vest
and duty belt.
Proficiency
Successful completion of this
course will be based on the attendee scoring a 75% on a written

Police Traffic
Radar Instructor
This course has been revised and
expanded from the 16 hour format to a 40 hour format in order to
take a more detailed look into the technical aspects of Police
Traffic RADAR Operation, to include recent court cases affecting
RADAR, health issues surrounding the use of RADAR, Scientific
Principles of RADAR, instructional methodologies, lesson plan
preparation, classroom instructional presentations, policy and
procedure review, new technology review, classroom and field
work projects, and day and night time RADAR road operation and
proficiency.
Who should attend
Only officers holding basic law
enforcement certification and particularly those officers
assigned to traffic enforcement units. The officer must have
also successfully completed the RADAR Operator's course, and
Specific Skill or Basic Instructor Development course. It is
strongly recommended that those who elect to attend this
training be current on the scientific principles of police
traffic RADAR and familiar with road visual speed estimates and
proper tracking history.
Special equipment needed
Officers are requested to bring
departmental issued RADARs for field practical exercises and
road proficiency testing. All other equipment and materials
will be furnished to the student by the Academy.
PR-24 Instructor
Designed to certify the officer
as a PR-24 Instructor.
Who should attend
Departmental defensive tactics
instructors and training officers of departments that utilize
the PR-24 and who will be instructing this course to other
officers. All officers must hold SC Criminal Justice Academy
Specific Skill Instructor or Basic Instructor Accreditation.
Proficiency
Officers must obtain a
proficiency rating of 95%, a minimum written test score of 85%,
and a minimum presentation score of 85%.

PR-24 Baton, baton belt ring, gym
clothing, handcuffs, and groin cup.
PR-24 Instructor
Recertification
Designed to review and provide
instruction for the recertification of officers currently
holding PR-24 Baton Instructor Certification.
Who should attend
Law enforcement and correctional
officers who currently hold a SCCJA PR-24 Instructor
certification, and who have NOT completed a
proficiency in the past three years.
Proficiency
Officers will be required to
achieve a proficiency rating of 95%, a minimum written test
score of 85%, and a minimum presentation score or 85%.

Monadnock PR-24 Baton, special
baton ring, belt, gym clothing, groin cup, and mouth piece.
School Resource Officer (Basic)
Designed to give officers who are
working in a school setting, whether full or part-time, general
knowledge needed to relate successfully to educational
personnel, students, parents, and the community. The duties of
the SRO, SC Juvenile Law, child abuse, teen suicide, gangs,
instructor development, controlled substances, and the
developmental stages of youth are foundational to this course.
Who should attend
Certified officers, no specific
length of service. All officers who are assigned to schools or
who work with students at any level of education such as DARE
officers.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a minimum
test score of 75% on a written test. This course meets
requirements for Continuing Law Enforcement Education Hours (CLEE).
School Resource
Officer (Advanced)
Designed to increase the School
Resource Officer's knowledge in dealing with situations which
occur within and around a school environment. Broadening the
instruction delivered in the Basic School Resource Officer
course, this course focuses on applied functions of the SRO to
include: writing Memoranda of Understanding; CPTED; Defensive
Tactics; compiling Crisis Response Manuals; Critical Incident
Response; Roles, Responsibilities, and Ethics; and Crimes
Against Children, as well as a Legal Update / Refresher.
Who should attend
Officers who have previously
completed the Basic School Resource Officer course and are
deployed in a school, and supervisory personnel responsible for
same.
Specific Skills Preparatory
Instructor
Designed for those departmental
officers who have been selected to instruct in specific skill
areas only, but must satisfy course requirements before
instructing. Those areas are: Firearms, Driving, PR-24, FTO,
RADAR, and Defensive Tactics.
Course material will include such
subjects as: Introductions to instructional systems with
emphasis on technique of instruction, performance objectives,
lesson plan use and testing evaluation.
Who should attend
Certified law enforcement
officers who have been selected by their department/agency to be
an instructor in specific skill area. Officers are required to
bring a pre-approved lesson plan from their department or
agency. It is recommended that they select a subject area in
which they have some knowledge.
Proficiency
Officers must achieve a
satisfactory rating on a 20 minute classroom presentation of
prepared approved lesson plan in order to pass the course,
receive a certificate of accreditation and recertification
credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education hours - CLEE).
Tactical Narcotics Training
Designed to acquaint DRUG
AGENTS with tactics, techniques and procedures that
increase safety and decrease risks involved in drug operations.
This is NOT a SWAT or SRT school. Officers
should expect an advanced, intense, physical and mental class
involving threat/target identification, teamwork and decision
making. Instruction will be lecture/discussion followed by
range/lab exercises involving team building, firearms, building
entry and vehicle stops. Officers will utilize simunition guns
that inflect some physical discomfort. Night firing on Tuesday.
Who should attend
Attendees shall be certified
officers, completed the CJA Drug Investigation or comparable 40
hour investigation school and have working knowledge of drug
investigation procedure and legal requirements. Officers should
have a physical exam prior to attending and be able to perform
strength and cardiovascular exercises under stress.
Proficiency
Officer attendance and
participation along with meeting instructor approval on
lab/range exercises must be met in order to receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE). Officers are required to complete the entire week
of training and should resolve conflicts prior to attending.
Special equipment needed
Five days of law enforcement
identifiable clothing and shoes for raid and search warrants
operations. Ballistic vest, gloves, handcuffs/keys, flashlight,
groin protector/sports bra, duty firearm/holster, 200 rounds of
ammo, shotgun, 25 rounds of #8 shot and 100 rounds of 9mm ammo
for use in the Academy supplied H&K MP-5 familiarization
training. No cross-draw, ankle or shoulder holsters. Shooting
glasses and ear protection provided. Please provide the
above information to students prior to attending.
Technical Surveillance
Designed for officers beginning
to work in the field of technical surveillance. Topics to be
addressed include: surveillance laws, basic electronics, audio
and video theory, night vision devices, basic equipment
maintenance, purchasing, equipment installation and surveillance
operation techniques. The course consists of
lecture/discussion, electronics lab and practical exercises.
Who should attend
Officers who are beginning work
in the field of technical surveillance and have completed Drug
Investigations or Basic Detective training at the SCCJA or a
comparable investigations course of 40 or more hours and have a
good understanding of investigation procedures.
Proficiency
Class attendance and successful
completion of practical application exercises must be met in
order to receive Continuing Law Enforcement Education Credit
hours (CLEE) for recertification credit.
Special equipment needed
Officers should wear non-uniform
range type clothing. Most of the practical exercises will be in
the field or in the lab, building electrical devices.
Technical Traffic
Collision Investigation
This course builds on the
At-Scene Traffic Collision Investigation course. It
encompasses, in more detail, the technical aspects of the
on-scene investigation process. Topics that will be covered in
greater detail are: time-distance, conservation of linear linear
momentum, vector sum analysis, linear perimeter damage analysis,
airborne equations, speed estimates, field validation testing,
and further development of physical evidence pertaining to the
driving triangle (driver, vehicle, road).
Who should attend
Basic law enforcement certified
officers who are assigned to traffic units or who are called
upon regularly to investigate traffic accidents. officers must
have successfully completed the At-Scene Investigation course in
order to attend this course.
Proficiency
Officers must obtain a minimum of
75% on the final examination and successfully complete all
homework and classroom projects assigned in order to receive
recertification credit (Continuing Law Enforcement Education
hours - CLEE).
Traffic Collision
Reconstruction
Designed as a follow-up course
for the At-Scene and Technical Traffic Collision Investigation
Courses, giving the officer hands-on experience in
reconstructing a collision and presenting that analysis in a
courtroom environment.
Who should attend
Those attending should be
officers assigned primarily to traffic related duties,
specifically those dealing with the investigation of traffic
collisions. To be eligible to attend this course, the student
must have attended and successfully completed both the At-Scene
and Technical Traffic Collision Investigation courses.
Proficiency
Officers must obtain a minimum
score of 75% on final examination and successfully investigate
and present a traffic collision scenario in a courtroom
